However, detecting glaucomatous changes in optic nerves can be a difficult task and one in which there is poor interobserver agreement. Historically, clinicians relied on clinical assessment (ophthalmoscopy and fundus photography) of the ONH and RNFL to identify the structural changes. Glaucoma can be defined as a chronic, progressive loss of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) that results in characteristic structural-optic nerve head (ONH) and retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL)-damage and corresponding functional (visual field) loss.
